At age 14, I took my first job. On foot, I delivered supermarket coupon newsletters to neighborhoods in Queens, New York on weekends, between 6am and 2pm. During the frigid, cold winter months, I layered my clothes with two of everything (pants, sweaters, and socks) — followed by a plastic covering to avoid snow getting through them.
Working outdoors in the summer wasn’t any easier. I sweat profusely. After my route, I went back to the supermarket and packed grocery bags for customers, an experience that paid minimum wage plus tips.
At age 18, I entered into the Marine Corps looking for a change and an opportunity to grow as a man. After 6 months, the Gulf War broke out and I had no choice but to be deployed overseas. It was a bittersweet experience. I learned another life lesson — discipline.
In 1994, I returned to New York, thinking I finally left the war behind me, only to find myself entering another war – poverty.
With little money, I was forced to move back in my parents’ home to live in the basement. I’ve bet you’ve been there too!
During the winter months, cold air seeped through the plastic that attempted to block the draft entering the my windows. Cold showers were the norm, because of the overworked water heater. My salvation was a small electrical heater and a tried-and-true Marine Corps sleeping bag.
In the fall the following year, I registered for classes at NY Institute of Technology. Going to college was a better option than hanging out in the streets and getting into trouble with my friends.
However, I was broke and had to hop turnstiles instead of paying the subway fare just to go to school. To make ends meet, I took different jobs. Even though I was working, I could still only afford to buy a banana, a plain hot dog or a juice for lunch. I bet you can relate.
Then, I did the next best thing. I quit college to become a taxi driver. I drove customers to some of the worst neighborhoods in Brooklyn (often putting my own life at risk).
My future looked bleak and I felt like a slave to my circumstances. Often, I was tired and sleepy. I was frustrated and embarrassed with what my life had become. Sound familiar?
Several months later, I took some of my hard earned savings and started an ice cream route. The business was promising, until I let a kid drive the truck and supervise the assistant. That summer, I lost all my money and accumulated enormous debt, forcing me to sell my taxicab and pay back the person who rented the ice cream truck to me. By now you can see that I am a lot like you. Trust me I know how it feels.
My next mode of transportation was a “jalopy” – one of the cheapest, oldest taxi cars on the market — which often left me stranded with passengers in the middle of highways in undesirable locations.
Breakdown after breakdown, I became lazy, depressed and overwhelmed. I slept long hours and ate several times throughout the day, only to become a more negative person. I questioned my life and my past actions. I felt like a victim and hated my life. In the following years I jumped into Real Estate and became a Realtor. I tried really hard to succeed but nothing clicked. I just spun circles.
It got so bad that one day a homeless person approached me. She asked me for some money. As fate would have, she remembered me because I was
always so nice to her. That night she gave me all the change she had collected so I could eat some food because I had told her I had not eaten all day.
That’s when I knew something had to change.Did I want to be a failure? No !
In 2001, I saw that a marketing guru was holding a very intimate roundtable. I knew I had to attend. Well, wouldn’t you know it? At the time, I approached the company owner to see if he would pay for the session, but he said he couldn’t because times were tough plus he thought $500 for a two-hour session was excessive.
Please keep in mind that at the time I was failing miserably in Real Estate. I was making enough to barely
survive. But I had a gut feeling that meeting this Real Guru would have a powerful effect on my life.Instead of missing the seminar, I paid for it myself. Sound familiar!
That two-hour session changed the course of my career. Sure, I had read every book that he had written… In a sense, I’d already read much of what he had to say. But when you are able to ask a guru questions that pertain to your business and your life specifically, you will find that the advice takes on new meaning… and that you can more easily take action and implement the advice you have learned. That is exactly what I did.
I took one little idea I’d learn from him back to my employer. That one little idea brought in so much incremental revenue to our company. Within eight months, I was promoted to the company sales manager and my salary jumped significantly as well. A few months after I got promoted to become the company sales manager I asked my employer to consider hiring the coaching services of the marketing guru I met a year ago. This time he listened.
In the following 8 years after hiring my first business coach, I partnered with the company owner. We sold over $100,000,000 worth of real estate, bought investment properties, trained over 100 Realtors in building successful sales careers and went on to build other successful online businesses.
I’ve also read thousands of books in the area of leadership, entrepreneurship, wealth creation and personal growth. I also invested over $100,000 in seminars, business coaches, marketing coaches, and life coaches. At one point all my friends were coming to me so that I could mentor them and others asked me to speak to their groups and as a result of public demand I became a motivational speaker, and a business coach.
